Katni is located in the Northeastern part of Madhya Pradesh (A state of central India). Katni is located in the Mahakoshal Region of Central India and it is 90 km away from the Divisional Headquarters of this region, Jabalpur. Katni is famous for Bauxite and Lime. Katni is one of the largest Railway Junctions in India and it also possesses the biggest Diesel Loco Shed and largest Rail Yard in India.

Katni forms the northern district of Jabalpur commissionerate division. Before 1998, when Katni declared as district, Mudwara was the biggest Tahsil of Jabalpur. Katni, Umar ans Chhoti Mahanadi are the three major rivers of Mudwara and the name Katni of Mudwara given after the Katni river that is 2 km away from mudwara.Katni extends from 23 °37’N to 24 °80’ N and from 79 °57’ E to 80 °58’ E and hight from sea level is 392 m.
